Blue and White Porcelain
Blue and White Porcelain, or Qinghua (‘blue flowers’), is the most common variety of Chinese porcelain.
It is an underglazed ceramic pigmented from cobalt oxide which is used to depict the decoration on the ceramic body, then covered with a layer of transparent glaze and fired by a high-temperature flame. The cobalt oxide turns into a shade of strong, bright and stable blue colour after the firing process.
The blue and white porcelain was originated in the Tang and Song dynasties. It gradually became the mainstream porcelain in the Ming dynasty and reached its peak during the Xuande period of the Ming Dynasty.
At SixteenO’s Art Bar, students get to create and design their own Porcelain by painting on a selected white base with provided pigments and covering it with transparent glaze. The firing of their artworks will be done before it is ready to be taken home.
